"Hiraeth"

Hiraeth ("here/eye/th") is a Welsh word that, loosely translated, means a homesickness for a place you may have never been; a longing for something you have never had.

We believe this word captures the reason most people seek out psychotherapy. While the easiest (and most commonly given) reason might be “to reduce pain” or “alleviate suffering,” most are ultimately seeking something that they can’t fully describe, and quite often have never experienced. You reach out to a therapist because you have hope that something could be different, even if you don’t know what it looks like or how to ask for it.
